Editor

Editor-in-Residence UCL 2022–

I have been creating and publishing nonfiction books across the visual arts, history and culture for over twenty years. I love discovering new talent and helping writers create the best book they can to reach readers. In my roles as Editorial Director and Senior Commissioning Editor at Oxford University Press, and Commissioning Editor at Manchester University Press, I’ve developed new lists, set up many series and worked closely with authors. At OUP I ran the Oxford History of Art series and managed the Very Short Introduction series, commissioning into both.

Freelance editor, project manager and book doctor: I have worked with major publishers such as Hachette, HarperCollins, Quercus, and The History Press, on individual titles and book series. My speciality is as a book doctor – stepping in to help both author and publisher – working closely and carefully on a manuscript, cutting, rewriting and editing as needed. I have worked for English Heritage and ACE as a publishing consultant, advising on brand and business practices. I’ve also been a recipe tester for a cookery book about cakes (which was as much fun as it sounds) and a map illustrator for Granta Books.

Arts organisations and charities: I offer editorial consultancy to arts organisations to support artist and writer residencies, and publications. I am publisher of a quarterly magazine for an environmental charity, commissioning and editing across a wide range of related organisations and members.

Writing coach and mentor, university writing and editing workshops: I have extensive experience in mentoring and coaching writers. I offer talks and workshops for academic writers, ECRs, and PhD students. I can help you with proposal development, book structure and the level and style of writing.
